Education Background & Academic Experience:
Dr. Jian-sheng Kang is a Principal Investigator and the Head of the Laboratory of Mitochondrial motility and Neurodegenerative & Metabolic Diseases at INS. He received his Bachelor¡¯s degree from Nankai University in 1995, and his Ph.D. degree from the former Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry, Chinese Academy of Science in 2001. Sequentially, he did postdoctoral training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, 2001-2003), and completed research fellowships at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institute of Health (NINDS/NIH, 2003-2009).

Research Interests:
Our research interests are focused on functions and mechanisms of mitochondrial motility and distribution, and effects of environmental, diet and genetic factors on mitochondrial motility and functions. Considering the potential roles of mitochondrial motility in neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic diseases, and a significant gap in our understanding of mitochondrial function, we use integrated approaches, combining disciplines such as molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, electrophysiology, mathematics and physics to study mitochondrial motility and functions. Our long-term goals are using nutritional interventions to prevent or delay onsets of mitochondria related diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and diabetes.
